How could I forget the most important piece of information? For those of you interested in learning about the Avignon Festival, here is the official site in English. There's a link about the history, so I'll spare you from my pathetic interpretation of it.

There are actually two festivals running concurrently (I've always wanted to use that word!): ON and OFF. The comparison I was given was sort of like ON Broadway and OFF Broadway...get it? The ON festival has the most established troupes, the best known directors and actors from all over the world. The OFF will have some known, many more unknowns...
ON performances in a language other than French are "supratitled", that is, there is a rolling screen above the stage which translates for the spectator.
