Man, Sartre lives!
Back at le Théâtre du Verbe Fou, hell is other people...
You are--your identity is expressed in what you have become, not what you are. Hmmm.
These actors were magnificent. Each entering their roles so well, that you can't even imagine as the wretched characters of Sartre's play.
I love being able to take pictures of the actors and stage director/managers--owner...etc.
Here are some pictures. Thank you Tisa for the pictures of the actors who played Garcin, Estelle and Ines. They really look different than the stressed out characters they play.
Garcin, Ines and Estelle are in hell, and there's no leaving. I find this play interesting because it presents some of Sartre's ideas on existentialism--existence precedes essence--you are but you are defined by what you become. You are the sum of your actions. Not to act, not to make a decision means that you have made a decision. (All of these ideas were discussed in our seminar today. I'll be chewing on this a bit).
Note, in English Huis Clos is translated as No Exit (not closed oyster).
Huis Clos is a legal term which indicates the status of jurors (or cardinals since we were at Le Palais des Papes the other day) who are sequestered and cannot leave the chamber of deliberation until a decision is made. In our legal system, the latin is used, In Camera...
Okay. Here are the pics--I tried to give you sense of the theater and its size (40 seats--an intimate setting).
